Genre and Audience

My chosen song was produced by a finish rock band ( Rasmus) that formed in 1994 whilst in education. this would be a good thought that at this time the band where aimed to create music for the younge audience (younge adults).
the song blue was released in 1997 in the ablum "playboys" and even though this was a rock album this is is more softer and more melodic from the rest of the album.
the image that the band showed the audience was a younge punk group having fun but now from 2003 he band changed into the dark and black shadow.
in my video for my chosen song,i chose to stick to the punk roch genre but in the video i hope to create the home made video of teenage fun theme, just like in katy perrys new song teenage dream:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98WtmW-lfeE&ob=av2e.
the Rasmus had already made a video like this with the cong "chill" where it involves the lead singer having medium shots taking of him at the front of a coach ride while it goes to different shots of the band in different band stages and the tour journey in Stockholm, Sweden.

Rock Genre
The genre of music for my chosen music video would be in the category of rock. Rock music is now a popular genre since entering the mainstream in the 1960s. the sound for this sort of music consists of heavy drum, bass and electric guitar which would form together create a heavy beat and mostly uses a simple unsyncopated rhythms with a repetitive drum beat and more than one guitar solo playing in the song. Other instruments have been used in rock music depending on the sub-genre.

Over the years rock music has developed many sub-genre when different stereotypes started to blend different genres with rock such as folk, jazz and much more. The number of sub-genres that have been created have developed like heavy metal, soft rock, punk rock and more. As these sub0genres developed, the sounds that the rock groups or artist have created today have changed and began to sound different which brought in a wider audience from different stereotypes.
To most people, the rock music is recognised as “noise” while image for this genre is mostly seen as dark, heavy, and warn down, most of these members would be seen as were known as hard-drinking, hard-living characters, some even came out with the demonic imagery to try and be this scary group, bands like “lordi” have used this look to come out and appear to be demons who rock.

Lyrics

I can't seem to fight these feelings
I'm caught in the middle of this
My wounds are not healing
I'm stuck in between my parents
I iwhs I had someone to talk to
Someone to confide in

I just want to know the truth
I just want to know the truth

Broken home
All alone
I know my father loves me
But does my father even care
If I'm sad or I'm angry
You were never ever there
When I needed you
I hope you regret what you did
I think I know the truth
Your father did the same to you

I'm crying day and night now
What is wrong with me
I cannot fight now
I feel like a weak link
Push it back inside

It feels bad to be alone
Crying by yourself, living in a broken home
How could I tell it so y'all could feel it
Depression strikes me hard like my old earth would tell it

To me, her son, she told me I'm the one
Pain bottled up about to blow like a gun
Stories that I tell are nonfiction
And you can't take it back casue it's already done

Broken home
Broken home
Broken home

My Plan

My plan for this music video was to record an image of family home, with the few dissagrement. from the lyrics the singer speaks of how he doesnt agree or get along with his parents which i plan to put in my story board as i feel its the strongest message in any video, to veiw someones life from their side of the story.

Green day - Time of your life
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnQ8N1KacJc

This video which was released in 1997, the video which features Billie Joe Armstrong singing and playing an acoustic guitar in a bedroom/living room, also going into different shots of more characters and a look of their emotions.
the video opens up to a long shot of Billie playing his guitar in a old and not the best looking home, which could relate to his status as a working class man. this then edits into a fast sliding effect into another scene of a women drinking coffee while looking into the distance and editing back to the lead singer, and this fast edit continues throughout the video. also in these edits other band members make their appearances in different scenario's

Textual Analysis 2

this video could be consider to be a short film that connects with the lyrics. the artic Monkeys released this song in 2005 where they created the theme of prostitution for a social realism of the working class.
In the video there many mid shots of the main character of the viedo in many situations as like when with another man which to the audience could connect to the lyrics as the "scummy man". In this video, it mostly shows conceptual clips of the drama.
The first view clips of this video, we see the main charter of this drama with medium and close up of her looking into the camera with a sad exprection as though she is agreeing with the lyrics of this song and asking for attention from the audeince, and effect that i think has work with the video. even when we are introduced to the "scummy man" they carry on with the same effect for agreeing with the lyrics in a sympathetic way.
The editing soon speeds up when the lyrics repeat the words "hes a scum bag don't you know," where the song now goes into a fast pace along with the editing.

this video sung and preformed by the "weezers". It was released as the second single from the band's debut album Weezer (The Blue Album) in 1994. the video for this song shows the band proforming at the original Arnold's Drive-In diner from the popular '70s television show Happy Days.
this video starts with the establishing shot of the diners sign while credits inform the audience of the creater and directer then editing to a long shot then to a mid shot of a news reporter and a crowd standing outside the diner, showing excitment for the performance of Weezer.
not only would the audience be excited to see perfoming clips of there music but as the video has included images of and old tv show, this reaches out to a wider audience. Happy Days cast member Al Molinaro made a cameo appearance in the video.showing the conceptual clips of the cast i think was a great way to combine the two, perfomance of the band and the popular tv show "happy days".
As we go into the diner the cinematograohy goes down to using mostly medium shots and close up's.

music video history

MTV was the phenomenon that gave so much power and importance to the music video. MTV started broadcasting in 1981 in the USA and it marked the beginning of the music video's ruling over the music industry. The first video ever played on MTV was 'Video Killed the Radio Star' by The Buggles.

In this video, the band "The Buggles", show us thier opinion of how technology for the music industries has advanced.

As MTV was broadcasting 24-hour-a-day music, music videos were needed to be produced. Consequently, music video began to play an important role in artists' careers. It is considered that even Madonna's career has been greatly influenced by her videos that presented a sexy, appealing look of the artist, (just looking at her video "strike a pose"). Some experts say that Madonna has been inspired by the image that the actress Greta Garbo has used in her silent movies.

MTV has been highly controversial: some saw as the beginning of an amazing, new, fresh era in music, others considered it to mark the end of true musical talent, as artists have been become more appreciated for their looks instead of their vocal abilities.

Top Of The Pops

Music videos where created on the on the BBCs Top of the Pops in November 1975. It was said that the rock band "Queen" could not be one of the first bands to preform a music video as they where told to be on a tour.
There were no home video reorders until the late 70s/early 80s, but broadcasters were recording TV programme on huge 2 inch video tapes.

although they spent alot of time and money on making some of there singles, the band where not the first ones to promote their music on tv. It was The Beatles, the real inventors of the music video as a promotional tool.
By 1965 the beatles became more known by the world. They also found appearing on live TV and live performances in general, to be repetitive and mundane, interfering with the creativity and freedom they found with studio recordings.

From November 1965, they made a series films designed for tv companies throughout the world. Promotional films with a sense of fun. singles like "We Can Work It Out", "Day Tripper", "Help!"and "Ticket To Ride and I Feel Fine". In May, 1966, the group filmed further promotional films for Paperback Writer and the less well known song Rain. Each video was assembled in both colour and black-and-white edits, as while America had been enjoying colour TV since the late 1950s, most European channels were still in the very early stages of colour broadcasts. Several different takes of both Paperback Writer and Rain were filmed in order to give different versions to rival broadcasters, who could then boast of having Beatles ‘exclusives’.

In 1967 they became very successful with the music video although they were still created on film - with the film promos for Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane.

IN January, 1967, The Beatles filmed a single promo film for each song and, for the first time, both films were created without any pretence of performing the song, allowing the feel of the songs to storyboard the action.
The feel of the films is much more sophisticated than the earlier efforts, with some impressively artistic cinematography (particularly on ‘Penny Lane’, where the setting sun creates some rather beautiful images).
The director was Peter Foldmann, a Swedish friend of Klaus Voormann, who The Beatles had known since their time in Hamburg in 1960. Voormann’s then-girlfriend Astrid Kirchherr became very close to the ‘fifth Beatle’ Stuart Sutcliffe and created the famed ‘mop top’ Beatles hairstyle. Voormann designed The Beatles black and white Revolver album cover. Klaus Voorman also designed The Beatles Anthology album covers, which used an intricate collage effect to tell The Beatles story across three integrated designs.
Arguably the most fun Beatles’ music video was their last - the one for Hello, Goodbye, filmed on 10 November, 1967, at the Saville Theatre, London, and directed by Paul McCartney himself - make sure you see the last minute or so.

Brief

My brief for this project is to create a promotional package for the release of an album, to include a music video, together with the two options i choose to go with my music video:
  • A cover for the release as part of a digipack (CD/DVD package)
  • A magazine advertisement for the digipack (CD/DVD package)
